Stay awake tonight, and wait for the sun. You say you hate your life - you ain’t the only one.
[22:23] jrisadork: i was just going through an old to-do list
[22:24] jrisadork: and one of the items was “date a girl who owns a domain name”
I’ve been quite ponderous this weekend.
I’ve been imagining my life in a very Spore-like manner: varying in scale from the single-celled organism to the entire universe. I thought about problems with my level of energy, my general outlook on life, my various virtues, philosophies and beliefs (or, rather, total lack thereof). I thought about bloodflow to the brain. I thought about neural mapping. I thought about the soul, religion, faith, gender bias, old-fashioned values. I thought about my fears and what causes them.
I thought of myself as an organism, rather than a conscious entity, and from that perspective, my life is beyond ludicrous, and all my stupid hang ups and fears are pretty silly.
I’ve decided to learn java and python. I had something of a prophetic dream a week ago that told me it would behoove me to at least try to learn java. Java doesn’t exactly appeal to me. It strikes me as quite bloated and bland. It may be that because I grew up with perl, I’ve been spoiled by terse and (potentially) elegant code. I don’t know. I just balked at the idea of a 5 line Hello world program.
Python has always appealed to me, with it’s forced structure and “everything’s an object” mentality.
I might actually make myself follow through this time.
I’m reading US Guys. It’s pretty interesting. It’s a series of portraits of American males. The author spent a year or so traveling the country, throwing himself into the lives and situations of the people he met. Fights clubs, Burning Man, Arena Football.. The style is a little more informal and less witty than I’d like, but not so much so as to detract from the experience.
Next up are Infinite Jest, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, and Life of Pi.
I watched The Lives of Others the other night. It was very good. Fast Food Nation, not so much. I also finally finished The Good Shepherd which was very long and pretty boring. The Last King of Scotland was pretty good. I’m looking forward to Grindhouse, new episodes of House, MD, and the new season of The Shield.
I guess I should try to sleep now. Tomorrow’s a long day. Despite working 60+ hours last week, there’s still much to do…
HAve you played spore yet? Is it even out?
