Those castles made of sand melt into the sea eventually
When Joanna and I went to see George Carlin on Sunday, I was amazed by his opening act. His name was Vance Gilbert.

Wikipedia has this to say about him:
Vance Gilbert (born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American folk singer/songwriter. He started out as a jazz singer, then switched to folk music, performing on the open mike circuit in Boston. His career took off when he toured with Shawn Colvin. He has recorded eight albums, including Side of the Road, a duo album with friend Ellis Paul. His first three albums appeared on Philo/Rounder Records. In 2006, Gilbert opened several shows for comedian George Carlin.
While considered by many to be an integral part of the New England folk scene, Gilbert’s approach stands apart in significant ways. His performances often feature extended guitar and vocal techniques, and Gilbert’s compositions frequently employ sophisticated melodies and harmonies that belie his jazz roots. The songs’ content often defies the folk genre as well: several of Gilbert’s songs deal with racial issues and his live show banter often touches on his being an African-American in a field of music dominated by both white performers and audiences.
In between work and Wii, I’ve been trying to find places to find his music. iTunes carries a few of his albums; I bought Shaking Off Gravity and one of his live performances. His voice is amazing, and his lyrics and composition are fantastic.
You should have heard this guy live. I normally hate live music. He made me reconsider. He has kind of a Bill Withers vibe to me.. Folksy/bluesy melodies and heartfelt lyrics.
I’ll probably get in trouble at some point for posting these.. but it’s worth the risk. You people should listen and feel shame for listening to the shit that you normally listen to.
O I know when he sang castles in the sand my eyes watered up
